Francophile Friday : Next Stop, Paris Metro

14.7.23

Paris Metro Sign and Greenery illustration © Shell Sherree all rights reserved

 Ready for the Daydream Express?  The Paris Metro could be just the ticket!

Today's illustration fixes our gaze on a Paris Metro sign set against a backdrop of beautiful buildings with bountiful greenery.  Where will your imagination wander first ... a fine French pâtisserie resplendent with flaky pastries?  A stroll in Montmartre or getting lost in a gallery?  The kitty cat's only wondering about climbing the greenery.  And on that note ...

Happy Francophile Friday to you!  PS: Take your daydreams on a trip every day by acquiring this gorgeous fine art print for your home ... available in a range of sizes, ready for you to add the frame of your desire.

Francophile Friday : Carousel Trocadero with an Eiffel Tower View

If you want to choose a theme for sightseeing in Paris, locating and visiting her carousels is an especially picturesque one!

My newest carousel illustration artwork is inspired by the beautiful carousel located in the Jardin du Trocadero.  Crafted from timber, this whimsical double decker offers not just a life-affirming ride: it also has one of the prettiest views of the Eiffel Tower you can find.  Situated next to the Warsaw Fountain, which transforms quietly into a massive 'mirror' when it slumbers, you'll easily while away hours here and wonder where they vanished. The park bench and its furry friends are rarely visible to the naked eye ... but if the wind is blowing in a very particular way, you just might be lucky.  And on that note ...

Happy Francophile Friday to you!

Francophile Friday : A Flowery Day in Ladurée Land

If there was a place named Ladurée Land, would anybody want to leave?  Not in a hurry, that's for sure.

Today's illustration shows an especially pretty Ladurée store.

Resplendent with flowering vines and pots, this one has a cart outside should you feel like eating and running.  Not with the cart, though, or the gendarmerie will whisk you away.  Our intrepid kitty wishes salmon was on the menu but sadly, she can't have her own way every day.  And on that note ...

Ahh, jumbo croissants that are bigger than a French bulldog puppy?  That I'd like to see!

Today's Paris illustration sees us taking a spot of breakfast overlooking the rooftops.  Judging by the poses of these cute Frenchies, today's news looks like it's sleepworthy.  Our sweet snoozing kitty seems to agree.  And on that note ...

Francophile Friday : A Tale of Frenchies Cosette, Rue and mum Alexandra

8.7.16

{Rue & Cosette's Tea-Time in Paris custom illustration © Shell-Sherree}

Today's post continues our interview series where I chat with the mums behind the lens of gorgeous pups on Instagram.  Last week's Paris illustration included sweet French bulldogs Cosette and Rue of @cocoandkanga so let's meet their beautiful mom Alexandra!

Alexandra, Cosette & Rue of @cocoandkanga
{Alexandra, Cosette & Rue of @cocoandkanga}

Cosette and Rue are such little ladies, often photographed in their flowers, pearls and hats, taking tea and looking as if they are about to head off to church in their Sunday best!  So cute.  Do they have a larger wardrobe than yours and are you ever tempted to borrow from it?

Oh, absolutely! I hate shopping for me.  But shopping for Rue and Cosette is so much fun! Since it’s hard to find pet clothes that fit Rue, I’ve started having fun in the baby section at Target. I could spend hours going through onesies and dresses and hats! Every closet in the house now has a section for the dogs’ clothes!

If you could invite any three people {alive or past} to a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party along with your pups, who would they be and why?

Oh, my! I’ll have to think hard on this one. Well, I’m definitely inviting Frederic Chopin. Hopefully, he’ll talk all about his glorious music and perhaps even play if a piano is nearby! Fingers crossed! Next, I’ll invite William Shakespeare. It would be such an experience to discuss Romeo and Juliet over a cup of tea. And lastly… we’ll have to invite you, Shell! You’re such a fun, imaginative person. Who better to invite! Then we’ll have our favourite musician, our favourite writer, and our favourite artist. What an amazing 'Tea Time with Cosette' that would be!

{Cosette and Rue @cocoandkanga being the little ladies they are}

Aww, aren't you gorgeous!  I’d be there with bells on and a piano in tow if needs be!  Our first custom project together was whisking Cosette and Rue away for an illustrated daydream in Paris.  Why is Paris so special to you?

Oh, what can I say? Paris is … Paris. I think it’s the most beautiful city in the world. I’ve never been one of those people with a big desire to travel, but Paris, I want to visit one day. My mother and I  have been infatuated with her for as long as I can remember, and Rue and Cosette have grown that love. Rue was our first French bulldog. Then, when we got our second Frenchie puppy, my mother and I had no idea what to name her. We threw names around for days. Olive… Minnie… Nothing seemed right. Then, we watched Les Miserables when it premiered on HBO. By the end, we had a name for our puppy: Cosette.  It was so beautiful. And it was French. It was perfect.

It's very pretty!  I was touched when you also asked me to create a memento of the love between Cosette and your grandma.  When did you first notice their special bond?

Right away! Before we got Cosette, my grandmother got very ill and was in the ICU for a long time.  We still thank God every day that she’s with us now, recovered. But when she was sick, it was a very difficult time. We got Cosette to bring some much needed happiness into our lives. By then, my grandma had been home from the hospital for some time, but she was still having some issues. Every Monday night my mother, grandmother, and I would run weekly errands together. The first Monday with Cosette, we didn’t want to leave her home with the rest of the dogs. So we put her in the back seat with my grandma. And that was the beginning of it. Cosette never stays home on Monday nights with the rest of the dogs! She comes along and rides in the backseat with Grandma, who stays in the car and cuddles with Cosette while we do the shopping. We have dinner at my grandmother’s house often, and Cosette will scratch my legs until I put her on my grandma’s lap. It’s her favourite place to be. She just gazes up at her with this look of sheer adoration. She’s never looked at anyone else like that. To tell you the truth, I’m a bit jealous! They love each other SO much! It’s really a very sweet thing to be able to witness.

You have a beautiful gift for storytelling in your Instagram captions.  I was misty-eyed reading your post about how Rue came to live with you.  Could you share that here?

I would love to! My neighbour introduced me to a woman who needed somebody to tend to her Frenchie puppy in her house a few days a week while she was at work. I happily volunteered. When I first opened the door to her house. I was greeted by this crazy energetic puppy who had a really tiny body and really humongous ears!! She was the cutest thing I had ever seen! Her name was Babe. I remember thinking that that wasn’t the name I would have given her. After I fed her and let her out, I would always play with Babe. My mother came with me and she sat on the couch, holding her in her arms like a baby. It was so precious, and so hard to put her back in her kennel and walk away. She would watch us go with such sad eyes and we always looked forward to seeing her again. One day, we walked in to find a note from Babe’s owner, saying her young son and Babe weren’t getting along well and that adopting Babe hadn’t been what she’d expected. She was going to sell Babe. I looked up at my mother and said, “The only person she’s selling her to is us.” When we went over to take Babe home, I remember thinking it would be the last time she would ever have to sit in that kennel all day and stare at the door, waiting for someone to open it. Instead, we would shower her with love. With her huge ears and the way she jumped up and down excitedly, she reminded us of a kangaroo! But we wanted to rename her something more feminine than Roo. So we took a hint from The Hunger Games and spelled it R-U-E. We love our Kanga-Rue so much! She has the best personality ever! My mother and I both love our “Kanga cuddles” so much! And since I don’t know any people who are more loving or more loyal than her … well, she’s pretty special.

While Cosette and Rue are your pups with their own Instagram account, they have two more sisters, Daisy and Emme.  That's a handful !  Did they all settle in together quickly or were there 'teething' times?

When we brought Rue home, we had Emme, Daisy, and our late Boston Terrier, Bella. After Bella passed away, we got Cosette. Rue drove Emme and Daisy crazy before we got Cosette. They were like, “we’re too mature for your puppy antics.” When we brought home Cosette, Rue finally had a friend she could wrestle with and play with all day long. They are best friends. I wish I could say all four dogs get along perfectly. But if you have more than two dogs, it becomes a pack, and sometimes there’s tension over who is alpha. Like real sisters, though, they’ll snap at each other and then a minute later they’ll be playing together and cuddling. Every dog we’ve ever had has been involved in a pack scuffle at least once except Cosette. She’s so sweet! Our little Coco is like “screw instincts,” and she runs out of the room until everyone’s calmed down. Sometimes, they make me want to rip my hair out. But it’s such a joy to be able to take care of them all. They each have such unique and wonderful personalities. Every day my dogs amaze me.

Rue, Cosette, Daisy and Emme @cocoandkanga
Rue, Cosette, Daisy and Emme @cocoandkanga

Along with your pups, what are your other big loves in life?

Well after the pups have been fed and played with and are taking their first of twenty naps, I like to play the piano. I’ve been playing for 11 years now, mainly classical, hence my earlier tea invitation to Frederic Chopin. But I also dabble in a little pop. Chopin is undoubtedly my favorite composer. I recently played his Polonaise in A flat at a recital. I almost had a nervous breakdown over playing it because I think it may be the most difficult piece ever—or at least the most difficult piece that I can actually play. Haha…

It's a mammoth of a work ~ you're very courageous!  If you could open your cupboard and put on an Abilities Suit and be whatever you wanted to be in the whole wide world, what’s the first thing you’d try on and why?

Oh my… This is definitely the hardest question of them all… I feel if I truly had such a suit it would be expected of me to become something amazing or magical so I could help the world. And I'm afraid I don't really imagine becoming something amazing or magical.  That doesn’t really appeal to me very much. The only thing I ever dream about {and have for as long as I remember} is being a writer. It’s funny because after school work, piano practice and taking care of the dogs, it’s hard to find time for writing which is my favourite thing to do in life. Nevertheless, I think about things I want to write every day. So if I had an Abilities Suit right now, I would want to be a writer with the ability and time to write down every story that’s ever been inside my head. And I would want these stories to greatly influence people and change their lives for the better! I think writers are the best teachers in the world. And they can keep on teaching even after they die because their words live on after they’re gone. That’s why I want to be a writer so badly. And it would definitely be nice to have an Abilities Suit to help me along!

Your Instagram for Cosette and Rue is already something that changes lives for the better with its humble warmth and delight!  You have a great start with your writing there.  Can I give you a challenge and ask you to sum up Cosette and Rue in three words each?

Oh, this is a tricky one. I hope I can do them justice. Here goes.

Rue: loving, fun, loyal….
Cosette: sweet, shy, caring…

And both adorable!  Thank you so much, dear Alexandra.  You and your pups are a joy.

You can follow the ongoing adventures of @cocoandkanga here.  And on that note ....

Happy Frenchie Friday to you!

Paris Daydreams : Agent Violet or the Scarlet Pimpernel ?

8.9.15

Fashion and fluffballs illustration : The Scarlet Pimpernel in Paris © Shell-Sherree
{Fashion and fluffballs illustration :  The Scarlet Pimpernel in Paris © Shell-Sherree}

Could it be? Is Agent Violet disguised as the Scarlet Pimpernel at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris?  Or is it the Scarlet Pimpernel herself.  Or are they one and the same?

While kitty provides a convenient accomplice to lull any onlookers with pearl-encrusted opera glasses into thinking our heroine is merely captivated by the lavish panorama laid out before her, danger is approaching with suave stealth.  As she elicits throaty purrs from the fluffy rumble machine beside her, Violet is assessing wind speed and calculating how far her gossamer cape made by her Ninja silkworms can carry her.

Will she vanish over the balcony or use her wiles to sashay out through the lobby?  Can the pink champagne just delivered by room service be trusted? Do macarons have calories if they are consumed on the run?  Let us contemplate these questions and more.  And on that note ...

Paris Daydreams : Ladurée, Louboutins and Frenchie Kisses

11.8.15

Fashion and fluffballs illustration : Ladurée, Louboutins and Frenchie Kisses © Shell-Sherree
{Fashion and fluffballs illustration :  Ladurée, Louboutins and Frenchie Kisses © Shell-Sherree}

This little French bulldog knows how to thumb a ride.

Clearly today's illustration sees the tail end of a day of heavy shopping, fuelled by Ladurée and footed by Louboutins.  Understandably, this can be very tiring for a tiny pooch like this.  The restorative pit stop would be chocolate-free and puppy dog-safe ~ but there's only so much a liver and spinach macaron can do to alleviate tired paws.

Now that we're home, we can kick off our shoes and run a peppermint foot B.A.T.H.  I suspect our Frenchie will be off like a pocket rocket when he hears the water running.  Thankfully, we're already barefoot and ready for a speedy pursuit.  And on that note ...

Paris Daydreams : If the Fiat Fits

{Fashion and fluffballs illustration : Paris Pink and Far From Pedestrian © Shell-Sherree}

My, my, my ~ it's a spectacular weekend for a Paris road trip !  No need for oodles of planning or the tedium of packing a valise ~ or even a full tank of petrol.  We'll simply stop for Café crèmes and macarons or champagne and baguettes according to the location of the sun in the sky.  If our chariot turns into a pumpkin, we'll know it's midnight.  Then things will really get interesting.

Our only point of consternation is how to fit in our fluffy full-length tutus without cramping the paw room of our faithful mascots.  After all, we know our priorities.  On the plus side, we'll have no need of airbags.  On the minus size, we might need to make some alterations on the fly.  Thankfully, tulle is forgiving when snipped with manicure scissors. Pray we don't need to turn to a corkscrew instead.

All those opting for the ever-practical capris are welcome to shimmy into the back seat where there's more breathing space.  Meanwhile, I'll find some ribbon and tie a sundial onto the bonnet.  And on that note ...

Fashionable Paris Daydreams : Going with the Flow

A late dinner in Paris ?  Sounds perfectly lovely !  We have plenty of time for a pre-dinner stroll and what luck ~ this soft, quilted evening bag is just ample enough to double as a doggie bag.

Today's Paris fashion illustration is inspired by this image of Chiara Ferragni in a gown by Patricia Bonaldi.  The dress is all but backless, so feel free to BYO faux fur cape if you're prone to chills. On the other hand, some chivalrous man might offer to drape his dinner jacket around our goosebumped shoulders ~ so those capes are better left at home !  And on that note ...

Well, hello there.  Going our way ? I seem to have forgotten something ... let's see ~ oh, yes.  To put my leg away.  Tsk, tsk.

Today's Paris fashion illustration is inspired by this extravagant Dior gown.  I could have easily been more modest in the translation, but it seems I'm not above showing a little leg.  We've stopped well short of doing a Cancan.  {Come to think of it, I don't know why !  Therein lies an illustration for another day.}

Behold the function in this form.  Much macaron contraband can be obscured in the generous fall of the skirt ~ and it's ideal for kitty smuggling if the invitation states No Cats Allowed {though that could be grounds for a protest in the finest of Parisian traditions.}  And on that note ...

The Instasphere has blossomed forth with a proliferation of Paris petals in the past few days.  And very pretty it is, too !

While Spring has arrived in the gorgeous city the Eiffel Tower simply knows as 'home', I suspect a light blazer for layering will be welcomed with open, goosebumped arms for a little while yet.  We're past the tail end wagging of the four day weekend Easter brings here in Australia, but I vote we stay in casual mode for one more day and go walkies.  It also gives us a chance to take Kate Spade New York's Lily Avenue Carrigan tote for a kitty-toting-test.  {Looks like a thumbs up to me.}

I hope you'll join us !  We might even bump into some Nutella crepes while we're strolling.  And on that note ...

Paris Daydreams : Have Tux and Frenchie, Will Shop

23.3.15

{Fashion illustration : Have Tux and Frenchie, Will Shop © Shell-Sherree}

If the AIRFRANCE ad that inspired today's fashion illustration is anything to go by, I'll need a tux, a trolley and trail mix to sustain myself for the shopping experience.  Egads!  But it certainly looks pretty !  In for a penny, in for a pound ~ a cute little French bulldog for company must surely help. {I borrowed the adorable Miss Olive for this one!} Perhaps she can carry an emergency flacon of vitamin B on her collar Saint-Bernard style ... brandy would slow the process rather than hastening it, and I know which I'd prefer.

More than one of those bags contains emergency ballerina flats for those who would prefer them.  Black velvet might stand more of a chance on cobblestones than satin ~ since we're going formal for the occasion.  And on that note ...

In celebration of Autumn here in Brisbane, I'll turn my gaze towards the Northern Hemisphere and the arrival of Spring in Paris, which is pending according to astronomical parameters but already in place according to meteorological ones.  {Don't ask me why ~ I'm neither astronomist nor meterologist, though know a thing or two about being a Sagittarius. Maybe we need a groundhog to weigh in on things ...}

Today's fashion illustration is inspired by an image of Australian fashion blogger Nicole Warne of Gary Pepper Girl.  Forgive me for occasionally omitting our signature kitty mascot or a puppy dog ~ they usually find their way into my illos, but sometimes they pull the Greta Garbo card.  {Don't we all ?!}  I have matching cashmere cardigans stashed strategically behind bushes in case the bare arms are premature.  Bunches of flowers for all of us and we're set to go.  And on that note ...

Today's Paris fashion illustration is inspired by this image from the Le Meurice hotel to mark Paris fashion week.

Show me a trench coat and I see a detective ~ or a secret agent.  I inevitably google up kickboxing and martial arts classes when I'm home after a night wearing one.  Then the espresso wears off and I do yoga instead.  Maybe I can catch a potential adversary off guard with a sudden Lord of the Dance pose in the meantime.

Agent Violet, on the other hand, has mastered the art of disarming with a glance instead.  I like her style.  She has some openings for apprentices ~ do we have any takers?  And on that note ...

Paris Daydreams : Giddy Up, Buren

17.1.15

{Giddy Up, Buren : ink pen and watercolour Paris illustration by © Shell-Sherree}

Today, there is potential controversy here in our fairytale kingdom where boxes of macarons replenish eternally, and our favourite music is regularly punctuated by the gentle sigh of champagne corks popping while conversation and laughter bubble over long into the starry night. {And being a fairytale kingdom, there is no such thing as enduring sadness, trouble and strife.  We shall leave those behind for a respite while we're here.}

Today, for the first time, I have turned my illustrative fancy to Les Deux Plateaux, aka les Colonnes de Buren, aka the Buren Columns in the Cour d'Honneur in the Palais-Royal, Paris.

Actually, there's no particular reason why it hasn't happened to date ~ I bear them no grudge, although I'm aware they don't float everyone's boat.  They remind me of cylindrical peppermint humbugs, which could explain my partiality towards them.  I'm not sure why I was drawn to a wintery equestrian-inspired wardrobe choice on this very warm summer day here in Brisbane, but she does bear bare legs and strappy stilettos to counter the riding jacket, felt cloche and snowy-soft faux-fur muff.  Perhaps subconsciously I was hedging my bets to welcome differences of opinion on Les Multitudes de Humbug-Like-Doodads.  {Let's not stop at three aliases ~ so last year.}  And on that note ...

Happy Paris Daydreams: Pink Gown Vertigo in Paris

{Pink Gown Vertigo in Paris : ink pen and watercolour illustration by © Shell-Sherree}

Is it a coincidence that the words pink and Paris both start with the same letter?

I think not.

As for today's view, shall we peep over the edge on tiptoes or would you rather maintain a respectful distance from the edge with our kitty?  I have visions of a cocktail party here as dusk deepens. Don't worry, the balcony is larger than it seems ~ Chez Shell Sherree, space and time accommodate all our practical needs.  We shall hoist delicate fairy lights to blush our complexions fetchingly.  And they shall complement La tour Eiffel's very own twinkling light show. {Such a show-off...} And on that note ~
