You know life has taken an odd turn when you get dressed up to take out the garbage.

Ella, our resident catwalk kitty cat, would love to take this for a spin with the bin (heavily inspired by Grace Kelly's vintage VOGUE Australia magazine cover), but she's having a problem with the zipper.  I had to stitch her back in for today's illustration.  Forget the quarantinis, I think she's having a few too many quaransardinis.  And on that note ... stay safe, stay home and ...

Francophile Friday : Pink VW Balloon Flight Over Paris

The very last VW Beetle rolled off the production line this past week ~ such a shame to discontinue these iconic cuties if you ask me ~ but can it fly like this one?  I think not.

Today's illustration was a custom request by a sassy lassie who loves VW Beetles and commissioned me to create a beautiful illustrated artwork to capture and immortalise her furbabes Mitzi, Oscar and Bubbles.  So we decided to combine her loves in a fanciful balloon flight over Paris.  Little did we know at the time it would immortalise a VW Beetle, too!  And on that note ...

You can get high on life with coffee.  You can get even higher with haute coiffure!

If you're on the petite side, a voluminous up-do will add inches ~ and more than a few.  Tuck in enough hair pins, you can even shelter a bird or two.  And on that note ...

When they make cars that run on flower power, imagine what a lovely world it will be!

We'll wind down our windows and inhale the petal-infused fumes.   Cycling in traffic will engulf you in an aromatic cloud of bliss.  Ahhh!  Fill 'er up!  Meanwhile we can load up the back of this old beauty with bucketfuls of blooms and see where the road best travelled takes us.  And on that note ...

Fashionable Friday : Vintage Glam Hat Pat

10.3.17

Fashion and Fluffballs illustration : Vintage Glam Hat Pat with Kitty © Shell-Sherree

All for one and one for all !

Today's illustration has us ready to join the three Muskateers ~ hang on .... four Muskateers ~ and make it an even five plus one.  Puss in Boots would be right at home.

I love drawing vintage glam.  Frankly, it's easier for me to illustrate it than to source and wear it.  But wouldn't it be fun to harness your inner actress, muster your Golden Age of Hollywood, sally forth in your finery and have people wondering if you're taking a lunch break from a film set nearby? Yes, it would.  It honest to goodness would.  And on that note ...

Fashionable Friday : Going Dotty Over Vintage Fashion

20.1.17

Fear not, this fur is faux.   Thankfully when illustrating, the case is always so.

In a bid to disappear from the heat into a snowy wonderland, I was about to post one of my Paris carousel illustrations from several years ago and changed my mind.  Sorry if I've just disappointed you.  It's somewhat like saying, "I saw a majestic bunch of flowers at the markets that were so 'You'!  Here's a box of champagne truffles... I hope you like them."  My bad.

Nonetheless, here we are, with a something vastly different from the highly detailed and delicate work embodied in that gilt-edged and pastel-encrusted carousel, tiny enough to fit on a sheet of A4.   You could take this vintage ensemble for a spin on one of those winter-clad horsies and be snug as a bug in a rug.  Oh, all right then.  Go take a peek.  Don't say I never give you anything.  Hang on ... do say I always give you something?  Curse you, double negatives, and pass the hip flask of brandy. And on that note ...

Fashionable Friday : Make Like Diane Keaton

11.11.16

Fashion and Fluffballs illustration Lilac Seventies-Style Slouching  © Shell-Sherree

Someone once likened me to Diane Keaton.

As I'm not tall in stature, I have a feeling this observation owed more to my oft-circuitous conversational path than to appearance.  To be fair, I leave a good breadcrumb trail that's easily followed if you keep your wits about you.  But keeping a bag of trail mix in your pocket isn't a bad idea.

Anyhoo, potential vague similarities aside, today's illustration is inspired by the always-stylish Ms Keaton.  Is she a lover of cats? I rather suspect so. Speaking of cats, did I tell you about the time I saw a black hat on the side of a ... ooh, fairy floss !  And on that note ...

Today's illustration is inspired by vintage Dior.  Always feminine.  Always beautiful.

I actually possess a huge white hat somewhat like this one.  It lives in my carport, ready to be tossed in the car if I'm heading for the great outdoors.  I think I've worn it once.  Maybe this spring! 'Tis the season of transformation, after all.  And on that note ...

Fashionable Friday : Vintage Violet and the Happiness Weed

21.7.16

Paris fashion illustration: Violet and Vintage Dior with Fluffballs © Shell-Sherree
{Fashion illustration: Violet and Vintage Dior in Paris  © Shell-Sherree}

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.  A purple weed foraged amongst foliage on my studio desk would not.  Most unfortunate.

Regardless of its rejection from the perfumer's arsenal, it is cheerful, humble and really rather lovely.  I'm sure the vase is at least half full.  And our thought for the day, even more so.  Always choose happiness.

Today's illustration rewinds us with a nod to vintage Dior and has me wondering where Agent Violet has got to.  So come, let us scoop up our skirts, sip medicinal brandy from our gold monogrammed hip flasks and ...oh.  Perhaps therein lies the problem.  And on that note ...

Fashionable Friday : Out of Africa-ish

{Fashion and Fluffballs illustration: Vintage Camera Romance © Shell-Sherree}

Not quite Out of Africa, but from the looks of that fence, this could be our definition of a weekend with the big cats.

Call me old-fashioned but there's a certain romance about old cameras and the careful consideration called for when capturing a moment in time without the ease of digital indulgence.  And don't get me started on dark rooms.  Is a kiss stolen while gently swirling paper and watching an image come alive under the ripples more breathtaking than a smooch exchanged over a computer screen?

Let us compose ourselves and sip G&Ts with a slice of finely-Laguioled lime while we ponder on the meritous possibilities of hipsters trading fudge brownies for Box Brownies.  Perhaps not a moment too soon.  And on that note ...

Behold the beehive.

When having a bad hair day, a hat is always an option.  But how better to use that engineering degree than constructing a beehive instead.  Steel is so yesterday.

So come, let us don our long gloves, clink pink champagne and start misbeehiving.  May the puns begin.  And on that note ...

Fashionable Flashback : Royal Ascot and Almost-Audrey

19.5.15

Fashion illustration : Royal Ascot and Almost-Audrey © Shell-Sherree
{Fashion illustration : Royal Ascot and Almost-Audrey © Shell-Sherree}

When this Audrey Hepburn inspiration leapt out at me, I illustrated first and asked questions later.

This felt like My Fair Lady ~ but didn't seem right.  I turned to my Golden Age of Hollywood 'go to' person and she came up with the answer, as I knew she would.  She's modest, so I'll leave her to put up her hand if she wishes ~ meanwhile, "Thank you again, my sweet !"

Turns out Audrey is modelling a costume from the Royal Ascot scene ~ but it wasn't one of her costumes in the movie.  Cecil Beaton {designer, photographer, illlustrator and generally artistic bod} asked her to model his other creations, to the chagrin of director George Cukor or so the story goes.  Mr Beaton's designs are exquisite and even more so on Audrey, so it's easy to forgive his mildly eccentric request.

One of these days, I will illustrate Audrey in 'the real costume' from that scene, in all its iconic magnificence.  Meanwhile, let us move our bloomin' proverbials onto a spot of tea and cucumber sandwiches.  And on that note ...

Fashionably Fluffy : Golden Girl from the Golden Age

6.5.15

Fashion illustration : Mitzi Ruffled in Pink, Ivory and Blue © Shell-Sherree
{Fashion illustration : Mitzi Ruffled in Pink, Ivory and Blue © Shell-Sherree}

While we're thinking 'costumes' in light of yesterday's annual Met Ball fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York city ~ {and some designers ran out of fabric, it seems} ~ today's costume illustration is closer to home for me.

Costumes from the Golden Age of Hollywood is currently on display at the Museum of Brisbane {closes 24th May 2015}.  My mum, sister, niece and I went along for a very lovely 'girly' morning out.  This gorgeous curation came from the private collection of Brisbane lawyer Nicholas Inglis.  {You can watch him talking about it here.}  A theatre and film buff, he has been amassing gems over the past 20 years like the one I've illustrated today, worn by Mitzi Gaynor in Golden Girl {1951}.  It's my personal favourite, though many were only a swoon behind.  When the pressure was on, the ruffles had it !

This fluffy confection is a work of art within the underskirt that only revealed itself when Mitzi Gaynor twirled enough to reveal glimpses of fuchsia, white and cobalt.  The actual costume is more ivory than white, so I gather the costume colour was adjusted as they often did.  I love it even more because the ruffles are a surprise.  Flirtatious.  A playful wink rather than putting all the goods on display.  Much more enticing.  And on that note ...

Fashionable Friday : Netting a Cat in the Hat

17.4.15

{Fashion illustration : In the Pink with Netted Hat and Cat © Shell-Sherree}

Uh-oh.  It's hat hair time again.  Just when you thought you were off the hook.  Surprise !

Today's fashion illustration indulges my current state of Jean Shrimpton smittendom.  Here's the original inspiration ~ and if you ask me, there was more than a dash of Cat in the Hat behind that.

So, let's all have hat hair together this weekend.  It's been pretty breezy here this afternoon, so we might need luxury-length hat pins, but old school glamour does not come without sacrifice.  And we're at risk of getting something caught if we bat our false eyelashes too heavily under that netting, but I'm willing to take one for the team if you are.  And on that note ...

Fashionable Friday : Double Trouble, Fluff and Cuddle

28.3.15

{Fashion animals illustration : Double Trouble, Fluff and Cuddle © Shell-Sherree}

You could be forgiven for thinking you spent too long at the pink champagne fountain during our last post  {after all, Hugh was there ...}, but fret not, you aren't seeing double.

Today's fashion illustration is inspired by another walk down Jean Shrimpton memory lane ~ and I couldn't help but think a couple of kittens would enjoy fluffing around amongst the froth and feathers.  Not to mention it takes away the ever-present conundrum of what to do with one's hands when being photographed.

You'll be glad to see we're wearing flats today, though it looks like we aren't actually walking anywhere ~ so I could have brought out the stilettos big-time. Say, we could go-go dance in situ while the going is good !  What do you say ~ are we game?  And on that note ...

Fashionable Flashback : Hatted Pale Pink Pixie

This is my kind of hat.  Simple, elegant and large enough to shelter an armful of kittens or puppies if needed.  And I challenge new freckles to get past this one.  {While I love my freckles, I have ample to suit my current needs.}

Today's fashion illustration is somewhat inspired by a vintage Vogue cover with Jean Shrimpton ~ who, incidentally, is my new inspiration-obsession, so prepare for more where today's came from !

Where are we off to ?  How about the races for a start?  Pink champagne fountains are popping in our marquee, along with nose powdering stations and complimentary gold-trimmed paper fans should the temperatures unexpectedly rise.  And on that note ...

Throwback Thursday: Ruffled Vintage Glam

5.3.15

illustration, Shell Sherree, fashion illustration, vintage glam
{Ruffled Vintage Glam in Black and Gold : ink pen, pencil and watercolour fashion illustration © Shell-Sherree}

I haven't yet scored Chanel at my local animal welfare thrift shops, but I have been lucky with a Max Mara shirt dress.  Much as I tried, I had to concede gingham is not really my best friend so I donated it back to make an animal-loving gingham-fancier's day.  But I scored a keeper in a black Lacroix knit with ribbon ties in strategic places so I can gift-wrap myself for our Hugh or his fun and fetching doppelgänger when he dances along with pet dogs in tow.

On the heels of last week's vintage Dior, today's fashion illustration is very loosely inspired by vintage Chanel and Christy Turlington back in the 90s.  I took a lot of poetic licence with the top, as it just looked black, black and black to me.  I don't wear much black while the sun is up nowadays, but come nightfall, I'm still a helpless schmuck for its bewitching siren call.  Perhaps you'd like yours in deep purple, cafe au lait or charcoal-grey?  Pop behind the screen and when you're ready, we'll match our ruffles with gold-foiled truffles.  {The chocolate kind ~ not the pig-snuffled kind.}  And on that note ...

Happy Throwback Thursday to you !

Fashionable Friday: Vintage Red Road Trip

25.1.15

{Vintage Red Road Trip : ink pen and watercolour vintage fashion illustration © Shell-Sherree}

It's Sunday here but play along and pretend it's Friday.  Actually, it's a long weekend so it feels like Saturday again, just to further discombobulate matters.  We're celebrating Australia Day on Monday and while I started off thinking today's fashion illustration would be dedicated to that, I lost myself for a while on a breadcrumb trail of links that started with Australian inventions.

I knew some of the basics ~ like the Hills Hoist for drying clothes in the backyard, Australian Rules Football {designed to develop exceptional physiques in the males of the species ~ with an entertaining sport as a handy by-product} and the wine cask {trust us to invent something to simplify pouring wine and keep it drinkable for longer}. But I confess, I wasn't fully aware of just how many awesome and significant things we've invented.  Such a resourceful bunch we are !  The black box flight recorder, wi-fi and solar power.  Spray-on artificial skin, ultrasound, bionic ears and the pacemaker. And thank heavens ~ notepads and the clapperboard for movies ! Imagine the chaos and disarrangement of shopping and motion pictures without them?  No, it doesn't bear imagining. And we invented our Hugh.  What can I say.

But on to today's illustration !  On the long list of achievements, you'll find the ute, a iconic Aussie vehicle with the comfortable cabin of a sedan and the rear of a small truck, invented in response to a request for something that could travel to church on Sundays and take the pigs to market as well.  Nowadays, it's the vehicle of choice for builders and tradies, aka tradesmen. But while looking for a suitable vintage ute to inspire me, this image captivated me instead. So we're leaving the sweet pigs snuffling happily around the pastures and going for a road trip in a convertible.  And on that note ...

Fashionable Friday: Vintage Road Trip

18.11.11

ink & watercolour illustration, 5.75" x 8.5" [14.5 x 21.5cm]

Bonjour. I have returned.  No, this is not a self-portrait, though my hair could easily have grown this long in my blogging absence if I'd allowed it to.  Nor have I been driving around Australia with a rakish puppy dog poking his head happily out the window of a charming old petrol-guzzler.  But somewhere out there, it made for an attractive photo shoot{I drew on this for inspiration but its photo credit source has vanished, sorry... probably with a large pastel-coloured picnic basket into an eternal country summer.}

But what's that I hear you saying as your forehead furrows with concern.  Où est Francophile Friday?  Dove è Venerdi in Venice? Fret not, they will be back!  But while contemplating my navel for a protracted period {it's easy, I do yoga}, I thought it might be fun to post more serendipitously ~ more on a whim ~ which feels rather fitting.  Often on Fridays, and sometimes not.  Perhaps a different day entirely on the odd occasion.  Let's take the notion for a spin and see how it goes.  All that aside, it's magnificent to see you again.  You look even lovelier than before.  And on that note...
