Francophile Friday: Paris Daily Photo Reprised

4.5.13

{Tenin Perspective - Paris Daily Photo: ink & watercolour illustration by Shell-Sherree}

My life took a new turn when I happily stumbled upon Paris Daily Photo while following a croissant-crumb trail of links back in 2008.  I'm guessing it started with typing Paris into Google ~ no need to bring bring Inspector Maigret out of retirement.

I fell a bit in love with Eric Tenin and his gaggle of loyal followers.  This was my first encounter with BlogLand ~ and wow.  The wit, the repartee, the camaraderie!  The Paris eye candy, from the gilty gloriousness to the everyday!  I was captivated.  After lurking shyly for a crazy length of time, I still remember squeezing up the nerve to leave my first comment, and the warm glow of being welcomed {by Coltrane_lives first, if my memory serves correctly}.  Eric and Paris Daily Photo sparked the start of my own blog and many dear friendships both on and off our various respective blogs, seeded in a common love for Paris and discovering a whole bunch of other kinships {not the least being kitties}.

Each year, Eric holds a Paris Daily Photo Picnic {aka the PDP Picnic, pronounced PDP Pique-nique by those in the know}, and way back I whipped up a little illustration for the 2009 edition.  What do you know, tomorrow heralds this year's picnic so I've gone back to the archives and bent my 'no repeats' illo philosophy as I thought it would be fun to revisit.  Eric has updated his site design a couple of times since I did this, so it can go into the archives for posterity's sake {and posterior's sake}.  I won't be there and each year it comes around, I kick myself up the proverbial for not getting my proverbial to Paris yet.  I hang my head, Yoda, as I do my best to follow your wisdom: Do or do not.  There is no try.

But if you are going along, here's something you can slip into.  Plenty of layers in case of uncertain weather.  Let us pray for baby blue skies ~ either way, the picnic will be lit by the sunshine of your smiles.  And on that note...

Happy Francophile Friday PDP Picnic Edition to you...

Factual Friday: Eagle St Pier, Brisbane

24.2.12

ink & watercolour illustration by Shell Sherree

As we dust off our Zen caps for a weekend forecast of heavy rain and put our best philosophical foot forward {carefully avoiding the puddles and putting remorseful gold coins in the Greenhouse Gas Jar while tumbling the towels dry}, let's stroll past the Eagle St Pier in Brisbane's inner city and watch the raindrops falling on the river it embraces.   You can see this illustration from my archives was drawn at Christmas, and the vintage of the sporty yellow car on the left might help motoring enthusiasts to determine which decade.  The Eagle St Pier is a wonderful dining destination and host of Brisbane's long-running Riverside at the Pier Sunday markets.  While on their site, I found this clip promoting the River City.  Warning: could cause a dizzy desire to board a plane and visit me.  And on that note...

Happy Factual Friday to you!

First Official Meeps Baby: It's a Girl!

14.9.10

ink & watercolour weensy meep miniature, 2.5" x 3.5" [9 x 6.5 x 9cm]
For new visitors here who might be scratching your heads over this Meep business and wondering which exotic herbal tea we're dunking our nutty bikkies into, you can follow the crumb trail right back to here, in the comments section almost seven months ago to the day, where the word Meep first made its appearance with many thanks to Queen Amy.

Anyhoo, after adopting this word faster than the next generation i-Whatever will be adopted by the converted masses, we've had our first official Meeps baby.  Virginia of Paris Through My Lens is now the clucky mum of a dear little black rescue kitten and she named her Meeps.  In the grand tradition of the chicken and the egg, or a mirror reflected in a mirror {I'm mid-dunk of a passionflower-absinthe-infused Yorkshire black tea, in case you're curious}, how could I resist doing a Meep of a Meep.  And her mum.

Happy New Home, dear Meeps.  You've landed on your paws beautifully, little one...

Venerdi in Venice: Slice of Piazzetta

30.7.10

ink & watercolour weensy meep miniature, 3.5" x 2.5" [9 x 6.5cm] ACQUIRE A MEEP

If this was a night painting, these lamps would shed some light on the Piazzetta as we head past the Doge's Palace towards St Mark's Basilica in Venice.  During daytime hours, though, we can simply allow them to look pretty.  {Grazie mille to Pierre of Venice Daily Photo for the always-beautiful inspiration!} Judging by this scenery, if you hear anyone in Venice say, "I'm in the Doge house," there's no need to feel sorry for them or shout them a consolatory vino {unless you're in the mood for something medicinal yourself}.  And on that note...

Happy Venerdi in Venice to you!

Francophile Friday: Scooter Tour d'Eiffel & Giveaway Winners

18.12.09

It's been a while since I took my imaginary pink vintage Scooter for a whirl around Paris.  A lovely young lady with her very own pink scooter {and it's a real one!} happened to spy her recently, and I'm delighted that the original now resides in her home.  She was looking for something to pair up with it, so I took myself on a scooter-flight of fancy and couldn't help pulling over at the sight of the Eiffel Tower.  {And yes, prints are available.  Thanks so much to dear Virginia, who may recognise the background scene from a photo she sent me! V, I have something else in mind for the actual subject of your photo...}

Now, enough of the suspense.  I know you're speed reading, wondering if you've won my current giveaway.  I'll get on with it, then.  My usual barrel girl, Ella, was having a cat nap and I couldn't possibly wake her.  She didn't need to hang a Do Not Disturb sign.  I understand these things.  So, I randomly pulled playing cards from my old Darling vintage pack, 55 beautiful {girlie!} paintings by Heinz Villiger, and put a sticky note with commenter's name on each card {a lot of fun in itself}, then shuffled well and drew three.  In order of drawing {in both respects}, from left to right, here you are:

Congratulations to you all!!!  Hiker, please email me your postal address and choice of print, and I'll contact Amy and 'C of Favourite Vintage Finds' {the lucky last commenter, which goes to show it's only over when the Lady with Largesse Sings} in order to figure out the rest.

And now ~ Happy Francophile Friday to you!

Please, join me if you can, no matter what the amount, by clicking on the ChipIn button over in the little widget on the top right to help raise $50,000 by mid January to help provide warm beds, love and care for the 16,000 abandoned or neglected animals expected at the RSPCA Victoria's animal shelters over the Christmas period.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who's already donated!  Here's more info...

Francophile Friday Fleurish: Eiffel Flower Trifles

13.11.09

A shockingly long time ago {seven weeks if we're counting}, I mentioned our Brisbane miniature of the Eiffel Tower at Park Road, Milton, and sort of promised {ok, actually promised} to a certain lovely Eiffel Tower-obsessive in the comments section that I'd show it to you.  I was even so bold as to allude to {maybe} showing it on the next Francophile Friday.  Sorry to drag my heels, but at the time, I planned on visiting said monument, taking some photos, artfully arranging myself for a coffee at Rue de Paris {then La Dolce Vita for good measure and dangerously unstable levels on the Caffeinometer}.  Then, I would come home and illustrate a 2009 version for you.

That hasn't happened.  So here's what I propose.  Today, I'm showing you the one I drew quite a while ago.  And for the sake of fun and posterity, I will fulfill the daydream described above for a Francophile Friday in the near future. {I won't say exactly when, as there's some juggling to do on the drawing board queue at the moment and I don't want to drop any balls. Perish the thought.}  We can see how much the streetscape and my drawing style have changed {or not} since then.

And now, let's swan into our weekends with a patchy pink pot of hydrangeas, and a few rosebuds and hyacinths tucked in for luck and fragrant intoxication.

Happy Francophile Friday Fleurish to you!

Venerdi in Venice: Arch Rivals

7.8.09

Here we have the architectural equivalent of hedging one's bets, expressed in a typical arched window in Venice, grounded by geraniums running delightfully amok from the window box. I say 'typical', but the underside is a rounded {Roman} arch and the top is a pointed {Gothic} arch. And I've just spent a long and thoroughly pleasing time browsing Venice photos and failing to find a similar example. Hmmmm. Not so typical, I guess. Invigorated by an odd fit of latent curiosity about the whole thing, I just read that in early examples of Gothic architecture, semi-circular and pointed arches were often used in the same buildings - typically, pointed arches {technically a derivation of pointy-topped doo-dads} were used for larger openings and curved arches were reserved for smaller openings and windows. I guess they couldn't decide when they came to build this one and with a nice Friday afternoon Chianti beckoning, figured two styles were better than one. Who can blame them.

Happy Venerdi in Venice to you ...

Inaugural Pointy-topped Doo-dad Part 2

2.4.09

And not to be forgotten, the ultimate New York Pointy-topped doo-dad: The Chrysler Building on the corner of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue, a gorgeous Art Deco skyscraper. A bit like this, but shiny. Very shiny. Not to mention it also has gargoyles, inspired by hood ornaments and also very shiny. All kinds of wonderful.

Inaugural Pointy-topped Doo-dad

I've discovered quite a penchant for architectural and decorative features I fondly call Pointy-topped doo-dads. Alexa at The Road is Mine is kindly photographing plenty of New York Pointy-topped doo-dads for me and kindred PTDD connoisseurs to appreciate, with links to more supplied by witty and wise blogpal Tall Gary, aka President Linkin. I was feeling a little lazy, letting them do all the hard work, so here's my own ink and watercolour of a fine one on top of The Helmsley Building, pointed out by Tall Gary. More PTDDs to come from time to time. Pointy-topped doo-dad Club Memberships and T-shirts available soon. Maybe even keyrings.
